#TBT…Hackneyed hashtag or something deeper?

Millennial (and even some Gen X) social media users have become accustomed to the popping up of this popular hashtag on their Facebook and Instagram feeds every week on Thursdays.

“TBT” stands for “Throwback Thursday,” so people will ‘hashtag’ the acronym and post things like an awkward prom pic or an embarrassingly posed photo of them with their sibling, etc. on a weekly basis for their friends and followers to enjoy and subsequently rag on.

It is a practice that is silly, relatively harmless and mostly entertaining. Personally, I find myself habitually viewing these #tbt’s, but rarely putting my own images of yester year into cyber space.

Last night, however, stumbling across a ziploc bag of old photos that Dan and I had compiled for our Rehearsal Dinner slideshow, I opted to give it a go with a couple #tbt’s. It just so happened to be my best friend’s birthday, so I posted one on her Facebook wall as a virtual “gift” of nostalgia.

The memories came rushing back and continued as I thumbed through other photos on the floor of my living room. Here sat images of my friends and family, many of whom I’ve known and grown up with nearly the entirety of my closer-to-three-than-two decades on earth.

Having recently gotten married and boo-hoo’ing my way through the entire affair, the secret of my sentimentality is out. It amazed me, when looking through these photos, how many of these people have remained so close to me all this time as evidenced by not only attending my wedding but being IN my wedding.

All I have to say is thank god for friends and family, without whom we would have next to nothing. (And thank god for the weekly reminder of this through #tbt.)

Allow me to help…

Anne Hathaway.

You have earned success and an Oscar with your Broadway-caliber voice and a performance for the ages in Les Mis. You have also pissed a lot of people off in the process and are, for some reason, befuddled by this notion.

Allow me to help clear this up for you…

The heartfelt emotion you try to showcase in each of your exponentially more awkward, self-indulgent press interviews and acceptance speeches is transparently feigned. The demeanor you try to pass off as humble and appreciative is painfully disingenuous and seemingly contrived.

The common word and theme here is: TRY. You keep trying to say and do things that will evoke a positive and adoring reaction from people when in fact you are achieving the opposite.

People don’t like people who try so hard; it’s fake and ‘surface’ and reveals your true, poorly masked insecurities. These repeated, desperate attempts at authenticity and “down-to-earth-ness” must stop, Anne. Just stop. STOP IT NOW. It shouldn’t be that hard to just “be.”

In case you still have lingering questions or confusion, I have included the below photos to try and further emphasize my point. Note the differences…

…between this th (7) and this th (8) ,

…between this th (5) and this th (4) ,

…and between this th (2) and this 1759852 .

So, Anne, next year come awards season how about you channel a little more of this:

Jennifer-Lawrence

…and a hell of a lot less of this:

Best Day EVER

Met Nadia Comaneci
And got her autograph
Mingled at SapientNitro’s private beach club with Omar Epps and our students
Found heaven on earth at the Google beach club happy hour
(the drink on the right is a basil/ginger concoction – deeelish!)

Further enjoyed the opening of Google Beach (aka- “The Sandbox”) courtesy of their photo booth.
P.S. Thanks for the new profile pic, Google!
Made an avatar of myself on an iPad and had it printed instantaneously on a canvas bag (again, thank you Google beach) which is now my new favorite accessory.
 Blond hair? Check
Token side pony/braid? Check
French stripes? Check
Red TOMS? Check
Oversized watch and sunglasses? Check
Champagne in one hand, cheese in the other? Check, Check
I mean, this thing IS ME.
I plan to replicate this outfit later in the trip and carry this bag around.
Can’t wait for that and can’t wait for tomorrow because tomorrow (and every day) is another day o’ fun!

One might think

…that these are the only two songs available to French radio stations, DJ’s, and music television channels if one were to live here for the past month as I have.
According to the Film Fest students, though, this was their “song of the trip” (featured in the Competition film, ‘Rust & Bone’):
Meanwhile my iPod has been playing this on repeat (seriously, it’s a problem.):
And, finally, Liza introduced me to this little gem (I posted a cover video she’s obsessed with instead of the official video) which I gather is seemingly the only song getting spins in the U.S. right now. Ah, the things you miss when you’re away…
